Things to clarify:
What is Yoga?
Yoga is a state of being. When we usually think of yoga, we think about the physical postures (Asanas) that we see being done in yoga classes. This is just one part of eight on the eight-limbed path of Patanjali's Raja Yoga (Ashtanga). Yoga’s goal is clarity of mind. The physical postures help purify the body and enable us to sit for longer periods of time in meditation (which is also on the eight limbed path).

What are the benefits of Yoga?
The benefits of yoga are plentiful. Yoga helps to balance the body and mind. It is calming and nurturing. We learn to pay attention to ourselves on deeper levels. We gain strength and flexibility which help with back pain and chronic illnesses. It is great for improving overall health and fitness. It improves muscle tone and posture. It improves the functions of the digestive system, circulatory system, nervous system, reproductive system, musculoskeletal system, and respiratory system. It allows us to open up our energetic bodies to become more in tune with the nature of our existance.

I have never done Yoga before, can I still attend?
Although there are various levels of yoga that are attained, any beginner class can be done by anyone. All of the postures can be modified to suit any ailment that we currently have. Yoga is a process and everyone starts somewhere. We begin where we are and how we are, and whatever happens, happens. Yoga is adaptable. It can be done by anyone, at anytime, on any level of fitness. It is a state of mind. If the classes turn out to be too difficult for the student, it will be recommended that the student take either private lessons or beginner classes for their own safety.

Do I have to be flexible to do Yoga?
You do not have to have flexibility to do yoga, but after doing yoga for a period of time you will notice a great increase in the flexibility that you do have. Being flexible is not a requirement to begin yoga, showing up for a class is!

Should I eat before I come to class?
Yoga is best done on an empty stomach. Try not to eat anything for at least 2 hours before class, but if this is difficult, just do the best you can.

Can I participate in class without being nude?
No, all participants must be nude in order to maintain an equal footing among the members of the class. You're going to feel more conspicuous with shorts than without. Everyone else will be naked, and it's best if everyone is on the same level and equal (both with the internal and external) -- that's the whole principle. You will have time to "get warmed up" at the beginning when the instructor and the host are talking to the group before we start class. Then, the shorts should come off -- if they aren't already.

What if I get an erection during class?
It is understood that erections are a normal part of life and that they do happen during classes. They are not to be pointed at or goggled over. Typically, if you do get an erection, it will go away very quickly. There is a lot to concentrate on and to focus on with your breathing and postural alignment. If you do get an erection, don’t worry about it, enjoy it, and allow yourself to continue on with the practice.

Will I be touched by the instructor?
Yes – it will be necessary for the instructor to put his hands on you in order to help with alignment and posture. While this is happening, your job is to pay attention do the direction being given and to your breathing. Again, all touching is non-sexual.

Are we allowed to touch each other?
On the occasions when we do partner work, we will be placing our hands on each other. Remember, these classes are not sexual, so the touching will also be non-sexual. Any contact of a sexual nature will not be tolerated and will result in the offending member(s) being asked to leave the session. Anyone who is asked to leave will not be allowed to attend classes in the future.

What do I need to bring to class?
You will need a yoga mat, a large towel and a bottle of water. No glass bottles or soft-drinks will be allowed. Payment for class will be collected before class begins. Also, you can use yoga props which include: a block, strap, and blanket. If you have any questions on these items, you can ask the instructor. They are not necessary to do yoga, but they can be helpful in certain postures.

Where is the practice site?
We need a safe environment that we can relax without having to worry about outsiders looking in. The location of the class is to be kept secret by the members. If you know someone that is interested, you should speak to the host or instructor before the next class so that they can talk with the person that is interested. You also need to be at the site 15 minutes before class begins. The doors will be closed 5 minutes before start time and you will not be allowed in afterwards.
